31st annual Home and Garden tour returns April 29

It’s time to celebrate spring by sharing our vintage neighborhood with the Sacramento region at the annual Home and Garden Tour. Doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29. This fundraiser supports Sierra 2 Center operations and SCNA programs.

In addition to homes, visitors will see Classic Model A cars gracing our streets. “Ah-WOO-guh!” will signal the beginning of the event. These classic cars will park outside each of the five homes and gardens on tour. Rounding out the day will be food, music, displays, and arts and crafts for sale at the north end of Curtis Park.

This year’s tour features homes in Tudor, Mediterranean and other revival styles. While all homes have beautiful original features, interiors range from contemporary to classic. All have renovated kitchens and baths.

Outdoor spaces range from intimate gathering spots to landscapes with dramatic trees, fountains and patios. The homes on tour are located on a one and a half mile loop. Perfect for cyclists, who will find bike racks at each home.

One home takes in sweeping views of the park from a new master bedroom balcony, with a classic interior in Craftsman style. Its homeowners bought the home as newlyweds and added space as the family grew.

Longtime and devoted Curtis Park resident Gerre Buehler is sharing her elegant 1920s flat with a renovated kitchen and bath in a vintage style. Also on the tour are a Tudor with creative and unique spaces throughout, and an open Mediterranean surrounded by integrated gardens and pathways.

This year’s poster house is a prominent Spanish Mediterranean, rusticated within, yet punctuated by modern furnishings and bright colors. In addition to the tour homes, the ticket-map will indicate four unique front yard gardens where homeowners will offer tips and information.

Tour goers and the public will find live music, food and information displays at the north end of Curtis Park. Musical groups include flautist Sarah Karliner, the Jahari Sai Quartet, and duo Poki and the Green Grass Snake.

Food trucks on site will be Mama Kim Cooks and Masa Guiseria Taco. Picnic tables and chairs will be provided as well as restroom and hand washing facilities.

A special feature this year is plein air paintings of our neighborhood. Artists from Northern California Arts, Inc. will find what inspires them among the toured homes, gardens, parks and streets. Their works, along with other artwork, will be displayed for sale and for silent auction bids throughout the day at Nor Cal Arts’ booth in the park. Part of the proceeds will benefit SCNA. Oak Park artist Patris will also display her work.

Key home tour sponsors include Steffan Brown Real Estate, Joseph Eschleman, Wells Fargo Advisors, and Cook Realty. Tour tickets can be purchased in advance on-line at www.Sierra2.org, or at the Sierra 2 Community Center. Advance tickets are $25 ($20 for SCNA members), and day-of-tour tickets are $30 ($25 for SCNA members).

On the day of the tour, tickets can be purchased at the north end of Curtis Park at 26th Street and Donner Way. Tickets will not be sold on tour day at the Sierra 2 Center.

Docents and volunteers are asked to purchase their discount tickets in advance at the Sierra 2 Center or on tour day at the north end of Curtis Park.
