Decorations on Sierra 2 Center’s Christmas tree say a lot about our neighborhood’s generosity. Those decorations are gift tags with children’s names and wishes. They are part of the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree project, which aims to make sure
Tree project, which aims to make sure every child in need has a gift. This is the fourth consecutive year of Sierra 2’s participation.
The project adds to the excitement in the air. On the first day, even before the tree was up, the Bock/Pichinino family picked up their first Angel tag and returned within hours with gifts.
Last year the Sierra 2 Center had 115 donors assist 61 families and 150 children with toys and clothing for the holidays. This year the staff hopes to surpass last year’s efforts. Overall, the Salvation Army, in connection with ABC’s Channel 10, served 9,000 families and 21,000 children in the Sacramento region.
There’s still time to make a difference in the life of a child. The deadline is Dec. 14.
The process is simple. When donors visit the Angel Tree in the Sierra 2 Center lobby, they select a tag (or two) that represents a child. Each tag includes the child’s name, age, toy preference and clothing sizes. Donors register their tag and their name on the form provided near the tree. They take the tag with them to use as a guide when shopping for as little or as much as they are able. All gifts will go to that individual child.
Donors return their gifts unwrapped with the tag to the Sierra 2 office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. If necessary, the office can reserve a tag over the phone and provide information needed to submit with the gifts upon drop off.
SCNA and the Sierra 2 Center staff take pride in giving back to the community. In addition to serving children in need, Sierra 2 staff delights in seeing the thrill children and grandchildren have in dropping off their gifts. This year Sierra 2’s goal is gifts for 200 children in need.
