Artist Interview with Cristina Arizmendi of Arizmendi Ceramics

Why do you craft/make? How did you learn?

My first experience was at a recreation center in Washington DC while my family was in the military. After moving back home to Sacramento, I attended Sacramento State University and Sacramento City College. Professionally I become the personal assistant to master potter, Forrest Middelton, which was an awesome and wonderful learning experience. There I learned the business side of art, made tiles, and perfected my pots. Currently, I run a home studio and teach workshops and classes to both children and adults.

What is your favorite product or piece you’ve made lately?

I am currently making jewelry and African udu drums – in addition to my pots.

What sorts of things are inspiring you right now? Where do you look for inspiration?

Lately I have been experimenting with textiles in my work. I am attracted to the contrast between the rawness of the clay and the softness of fiber. I find inspiration in nature, where the river, the ocean, and and redwood forests meet – particularly where the clash is between the bright green moss and the neutral stones and branches. I try to relay this atmosphere in my glazes and the sometimes rough surfaces of my pieces.

Are you bringing/selling anything special at the craft fair?

I have been experimenting with line drawings in my journals, and transferring this technique to my pottery.
