Dear Energy Stars:

We're in the heart of the winter season when curtailing energy use makes a big difference. Keep those unnecessary lights off and the thermostats down. And keep up the good work! We continue to defy the odds and show that one neighborhood working together can save valuable energy (and help reduce global warming!).

Curtis Park Energy Stars continue to beat the odds and use less electricity on average than the typical SMUD household. This month we are only 19% (as opposed to 20% in past months) better than the average SMUD household, so it's imperative we work a little harder. See our progress to date.

A new study shows that for California residential energy consumption per capita to stay steady at today's levels, residential household electric consumption would have to decrease by 40% to offset population projections. View the study abstract.

Our New Year's Resolutions
It's our turn

Happy New Year from the Energy Stars Steering Committee!

Members of the Curtis Park Energy Stars Steering Committee have all made an energy conservation New Year's resolutions. Please join us in taking at least one new action this year to help reduce carbon emissions planetwide.

"My goal this year is to get off mailing lists and reduce junk mail at my home." Gerre

"I resolve to encourage all my students to turn in assignments double-side to save paper. I will use only reusable containers for all my family's lunches and snacks (no ziplocks!)." Arlene

"I vow to never walk out of a store in 2008 with a plastic bag and will mention my resolve to banish plastic bags to each clerk that automatically, like a robot, tries to insert my purchase into a plastic bag." Kathy

"I purchased a cloth bag for when I go shopping and I won't take any more plastic bags from stores. I will also make two-sided copies for everything I hand out at the community board meetings I'm involved in." Rosanna

I will register with Catalog Choice (https://www.catalogchoice.org/) to stop unwanted catalogs from coming in the mail." Terri

More from Terri:

According to Catalog Choice, 53 million trees are used every year to print catalogs, which translates into 3.6 million tons of paper. The energy used to produce the paper alone creates 5.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions-equivalent to the global warming pollution of two million cars.

Another option for getting off mailing lists:  Direct Marketing Association  https://www.dmachoice.org/MPS/mps_consumer_description.php

The first lets you pick catalogs from a long list.

The second (DMA) worked well for me in the past, by removing my name from pretty much all lists.

Former SMUD manger writes about energy independence
S. David Freeman's new book, Winning Our Energy Independence: An Energy Insider Shows How, delivers a wealth of facts on alternative energy and candid opinions with blunt straight talk. His message: We have all the renewable energy we need to wean ourselves from the Three Poisons and create a sustainable future for our planet. For information on Freeman and his book, click here.

Freeman will be speaking at SMUD headquarters on Wed. Feb. 13 at 1:30 pm. Curtis Park Energy Stars are invited to this special presentation.
SMUD's New Carbon Calculator
Wondering about your carbon footprint? Tried other carbon calculators and weren't sure of their reliability? SMUD has installed a new carbon calculator  on their web site to help you compare your carbon footprint against the rest of Sacramento. And it comes with the opportunity to offset your carbon emmissions with SMUD projects right here in town. Check it out at www.smud.org. And while you're there, check out the rest of their new Our Green Community web site.
