Dear Energy Stars:

We have amassed an amazing record of energy savings, but we need to work a little harder to finish out 2008 to be on par with our accomplishments in 2007. Consider these facts:

In August 2008, Energy Stars used 27% less (23% less in 2007) energy than the average SMUD customer and 13% (10% less in 2007) less than other Curtis Park residents.

However, in 2007 overall, Energy Stars used 20% less energy than the average SMUD customer and 10 percent less than other Curtis Park residents.

So far, in 2008, the Energy Stars have used 16% less energy than other SMUD customers and 8% less than other Curtis Park residents.

We can do as well as we did in 2007. See story below for energy saving tips. Let's show SMUD that we can beat the odds and exceed last year's accomplishment.

Good Energy Tips to Help Us Reach our 2008 Goal

thermostatDuring 2007, Curtis Park Energy Stars used 20% less energy than the average SMUD customer. So far in 2008, we are lagging a bit behind at 16% less energy use than other SMUD customers.

Here's some energy tips to help us gain ground:

1. Change light bulbs to CFLs and use only CFLs unless otherwise necessary.

2. If you can see daylight through your doors or caulking is cracked around windows, take action to install rubber seals around doors or caulking around windows.

3. Purchase a programmable thermostat for as low as $40 to regulate wise energy use.

4. Program thermostats for 68 degrees when you are home, and 62 degress or lower when you are gone or sleeping.

5. Have a professional check your furnace to make sure ducts aren't leaking and that heater is working to proper capacity.

6. Don't use space heaters in large rooms. Instead use a small portable heater to heat immediate area around you.

7. Put on a sweater before turning the heater up. Don't suffer, but don't overindulge in heat this winter.

8. Close fireplace flue when fireplace is not in use.
