...You do not repair the climate of an entire planet without staggering sacrifices, and people will not elect to make staggering sacrifices unless the burden is shared with something like parity." Garret Keizer, Harper's, June 2007
Dear Energy Stars:
It's getting hotter and hotter, so the time to rein in home energy use is now. Energy Stars have shown that we can do it! News and information below.
Be sure to join us on June 27 for a tour of the House of 68 CFLs in Curtis Park. See below.
Sincerely,

Energy Stars Do It With Less Electricity!
Curtis Park Energy Stars continue to defy the energy odds and show that comfortable and gracious living can be done with less electicity.
SMUD has again compiled the monthly energy use for Energy Star homes, for non-participating homes in Curtis Park, and for SMUD as a whole.
So far this year, Energy Stars have used 10% less electricity than non-participating Curtis Park homes and 19% less than those in the rest of the SMUD service area. Go Energy Stars! |

Energy Star Tip to Beat the Heat
After reading last month's e-newletter to Energy Stars, Jackie and Bob Wiens of 26th Street wrote in to share this tip:
"Thanks for sharing efficiency tips. I have one that's very close to free that works very well for us.
Our house has no air conditioning. We have a whole house fan, sun screen window shades, and close all windows and shades during the day and open them at night.
To keep the western/southern sides of the house cooler during the day, we cut cardboard to fit our windows and covered it with the thickest tin foil available. When we close the windows in the morning, we place the cardboard, tin foil side out, in the window. This reflects the sun back out instead of letting it strike the the windows. This is especially helpful in upper story windows facing directly into the sun. The ones we made up are two years old and still going strong.
Try, it works! Keep up the good work!"

Leaky Windows?
Leaky windows let hot and cool air enter and escape your house. A good source for do-it-yourself window repairs is: Working Windows: A Guide to the Repair & Restoration of Wood Windows by Terry Meany (The Lyon's Press).
You can also visit: www.sierra2.org under historic preservation information for a guide to local contactors who work on old windows. |

How Low Can You Go?
Last month I shared the results of my own energy reduction and said that in my 1,700 square foot house, we had four months when we dropped to only 9 kWh per month. I should have said we had four months where we used an average of just 9 kWh per day.
I asked if anyone has me beat. Energy Stars Steering Committee Member Arlene Krause of Donner Way reported back that she had one month where her household used an average of just 8.9 kWh/day. Can anyone best this number?
Be sure you continue to track your own energy use. To learn more about how to calculate your percentage up or down for the month, view the May e-newsletter.
