GivingTuesday: Restore Our 24th Street Theatre
Sierra 2 Center has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Our goal is to renovate our community playhouse, The 24th Street Theatre—performance space to many community-based dance companies, acting troops, filmmakers, musicians, and other performing artists.
#GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, November 28 this year, in contrast to Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping events. This year, kick off your holiday giving season by giving back in impactful ways to the charities and causes you care about.
Since the last theater update in 2005, we have logged more than 600,000 people, 3,000 shows, and 42,000 hours of activity in the 24th Street Theatre at Sierra 2 Center. But years of repairs are failing and many parts of the Theatre need to be replaced. A generous grant from the Sacramento Metro Arts Council (SMAC) will match it up our fundraising up to $40,000, but it’s not enough. We need to raise $150,000 in total to cover the new roof, seats, carpet, stage, signage, and curtains.
“We are planning a suite of theatre celebrations including interactive movies, a showcase of musical talent, drama performances, and other partnerships with our theatre tenants. Because the seats and carpet will be replaced we have a bit more freedom in which activities we can offer in this short window. It’s exciting!” reports Terri Shettle, Executive Director of the Sierra 2 Center.
Help us reach our goals to vastly improve your theatre-going experience. Consider gifting a legacy by sponsoring a new seat or row of seats. Own a piece of history through the purchase of a suite or trio of existing seats, a great talking point in any office or living room. These seats have seen hundred of shows at the 24th Street Theatre and in their previous life at Memorial Auditorium. Show or gift your support through the purchase of a “Restore the Theatre” Shirt or tote on sale in our office. Lastly, come experience an event at the 24th Street Theatre, you won’t regret it!

About the 24th Street Theatre
Over the last 40 years our theater, built in 1929 from plans by landmark architects Dean and Dean, has offered musicals, children’s theatre, comedy, drama, experimental and original works by local authors as well as Broadway productions. Truly a Center for the Performing Arts, the 24th St Theatre has also welcomed concert performances by many Grammy-award winning musician’s and local artists, as well as dance and film companies.
#GivingTuesday is a global giving movement built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities in the USA and around the world. With a mission to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season, #GivingTuesday inspires people to improve their communities, give back to the charities and causes they believe in, and help create a better world. #GivingTuesday demonstrates how every act of generosity counts, and that they mean even more when we give together.
