Learn the dances of Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, and Tahiti. Dancers of all ages and experience levels are welcome.
Hula: Students learn ancient and modern forms of Hawaiian dance, basic olelo (language), and gain an appreciation for Hawaiian culture. Students learn hulas within their historical context, develop an ear for the Hawaiian language via Hawaiian dance vocabulary and lyric translation, incorporate the use of hula implements(uli ulis, pu’ili sticks, ipu, ili ilis, etc), increase all around fitness level and flexibility, and share the spirit of aloha with their classmates and instructors.
Ori Tahiti: Students learn the basics of Tahitian dance, Tahitian dance forms (Aparima, Ahuroa, and Ori Tahiti), incorporate the use of Tahitian dance implements such as the i’is, coconut halves, etc, and develop an ear for Tahitian language via dance vocabulary and lyric translation.
Maori: Students learn basics of the Maori dance form (New Zealand), learn to master the poi balls and make own set of poi balls to enhance appreciation of the art form, and gain an understanding and respect for the Maori people of New Zealand.
Students may also take advantage of occasional workshops in adornment, costume, and poi ball making, and participate in field trips and/or our annual Ho’ike dance recital.
