Speaker series to help assess Curtis Park Village
By Kathleen Ave
Special to the Viewpoint
The proposed Curtis Park Village development is cited by many community
leaders as an excellent opportunity for urban infill and an antidote to
increasing suburban sprawl and traffic congestion. Many in the neighborhood
are supportive of these objectives but have questions about the impact
of this proposed project on the unique character of Curtis Park and its
quality of life.
How can good design principles help to integrate the new development into
the existing neighborhood? How can Curtis Park residents support Smart
Growth principles but continue to enjoy relatively safe streets? How does
the project approval process work?
SCNA's Neighborhood Concerns Committee has assembled a speaker series
to offer professional perspectives into these and other critical questions.
This series is offered in preparation for the release of the Curtis Park
Village Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR), expected to be released
in late spring or early summer of this year. The speakers in this series
will address many of the same issues that will be discussed in the DEIR-
such as land use, traffic and aesthetics- and offer their views of the
range of projected impacts of the CPV development on surrounding neighborhoods
and the City. In some cases, alternatives to aspects of the proposed plan
will be presented and evaluated.
The three evenings of speakers are timed to offer education and stimulate
neighborhood discussion on issues expected to come up in the DEIR. Each
evening will focus on a specific topic and offer plenty of opportunity
for questions and answers. In most cases, invited panelists are working
professionals in their respective fields and also Curtis Park residents,
giving them unique insights into the opportunities and challenges presented
by the proposed Curtis Park Village development.
