Board notes: SCNA Board meeting-March 13, 2007

Board approves revised Strategic Plan; forms Ad Hoc
Committee for Children's Programs; opposes city permit to remove healthy heritage tree

SCNA Board meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the "Garden" Room of Sierra 2. The next meetings are on April 9 and May 19.

President's Report
Board President Dan Murphy urged board members to make their annual financial donation to SCNA to set a good example for other SCNA members. He also reported the resignation of board member Marianne Waindle. The board discussed each committee's Strategic Plan goals and objectives and adopted them in turn.
Board member Kathleen Babin's proposal to establish an Ad Hoc Committee for Children's Program Development was approved. The new committee is expected to return with program ideas regarding how to better serve children and their families in Curtis Park and how to make those plans happen.

Executive Director's Report
Executive Director Julie Adams-Gerth announced that Weight Watchers increased their rental time at Sierra 2. Revenue is up. The long overdue office makeover has begun and will include paint, carpet and new furniture.
The Sacramento International Film Festival is an exciting new theatre user. At Julie's request the board approved purchasing 175 chairs for Sierra 2. Julie explained that renters often complain about how uncomfortable the old chairs are and pointed out that Sierra 2 only has one opportunity to either retain or lose a first-time renter.

Facilities Committee
With the new HVAC system coming online soon, the committee decided to gain central control of the thermostats in the building to conserve energy.

Development Committee
Board members were asked to volunteer for the Home Tour on April 28.

Neighborhood Concerns Committee
Three motions were proposed and passed. The principles developed by Neighborhoods Advocating Sustainable Transportation were endorsed. SCNA joins over a dozen other neighborhood associations in the group, which formed originally in opposition to the addition of new HOV lanes on Highway 50.

The board reviewed the situation posed by a developer seeking a city permit to remove a healthy heritage tree from his property at 2987 Franklin Boulevard. The board opposes removal of this tree and will urge the city to deny a permit.

The board voted to encourage the city, including staff, to remove restrictions on front yard fruit and vegetable planting as it considers changes to the city landscape code.

Neighborhood Concerns Committee Co-Chairs Rosanna Herber and Kathleen Ave along with President Murphy met with Council Member Lauren Hammond to review current neighborhood and SCNA issues. Future meetings are planned and the substance of those meetings will be reported to the board.

Senior Committee
The Senior Committee chair reported that about $5,200 had been received so far in response to the 2006 year-end appeal letters sent out; included in the receipts to date was a $1,000 donation from Council Member Hammond.

Heritage Committee
Heritage Committee Chair Dan Murphy reported that he has circulated photos of remnants of the trolley tracks found while digging on Fifth Avenue.

Miscellaneous
First Friday continues to grow, most recently attracting 175 people. Of those attending, 67% are SCNA members and 15% come from outside the neighborhood. Host groups are lined up through June.
