First Friday event committee seeks neighborhood host volunteers

The First Friday Neighborhood Fling has become quite a hit in the neighborhood. In case you have missed it, on the first Friday of every month, SCNA hosts an evening where neighbors can meet, mingle and enjoy conversation with each other.

Live music plays in the background, a hot dinner is available for $5 a plate, wine and beer are $4 a glass and soda or water is $1. Neighbors, families and friends are welcome. The event begins at 6 p.m. in Curtis Hall and is drawing about 100-150 people every First Friday.

In the beginning, the First Friday organizing committee and the SCNA Board handled all the responsibilities for hosting the event. Now that First Friday has become so popular, new volunteers are needed to help keep the momentum strong.

The First Friday committee has developed a detailed list of the tasks associated with hosting the event. These tasks include set up, serving drinks and food, clearing tables and cleaning up after the event. Board members still handle the ticket sales and the committee arranges for the food, drinks, fire pit and s'mores. Set up for the event begins at 5 p.m., neighbors arrive at 6 p.m. and the evening ends at 9 p.m.

A few months ago, the committee asked various groups or streets in the neighborhood to come forward to provide the volunteers to host a First Friday. To date, the response has been strong. A special "thank you" goes to past hosts that include the Dogzillary, Figure 8 Women's Work Out and Judy Green-Scheible and friends. In April, the Curtis Park knit group will host First Friday. In May, it's the Curtis Park Energy Stars and in June, the Portola West neighbors take on the hosting responsibilities.

The committee is pleased the neighborhood is responding so positively to hosting a First Friday, but more volunteers are needed. Please consider joining the effort to bring neighbors closer together and develop a deeper sense of community in Curtis Park.

If you, your street, or a special group of neighbors are interested in hosting a First Friday, or are willing to volunteer with others, please contact julie@sierra2.org or call the SCNA office at 452-3005.
