Join the ongoing group of artists that are enjoying the Open Art Studio
class held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays at the Senior Center. Take
advantage of the space to spread out your art supplies and indulge in
some creative time. Help is at hand if you want it, or you can tackle
your own painting, drawing or other art projects.
The artists attending the free class have all different skill levels and
reasons for attending. For example, Toni Hatfield, who lives in midtown
and takes the bus to class, appreciates having a regular date to do her
art in a space larger than her own home affords.
"At the Open Art Studio I can be in a room that has good lighting,
is large, and my vacuum cleaner's not staring at me to come work,"
said Hatfield. She also mentioned that she looks forward to this time
as an appointment. "I'm more motivated to do my art now."
Another class participant, Yvonne Sasso comes all the way from Rio Linda
to attend. " I've never had formal art training and I discovered
I have a desire to do watercolors," said Sasso. "So, here I
am, enjoying myself at the age of 57, and learning to paint."
Jo Horne (artist and mother of Senior Center Coordinator Janice Horne)
likes the opportunity to escape. As a full-time caregiver for her aunt
in the Tahoe Park area, Jo says the class is a great way to relax.
"There are no phones, no radios, and no TV," says Jo. Another
big plus, she says, is not having to pay a fee for the class, but she's
happy to contribute something in the donation basket, a sentiment agreed
on by the others as well.
Nanci Ginsberg of South Land Park, hadn't painted in 28 years, but still
dreamed of pursuing art. "This class is helping me make a start toward
that dream," said Ginsberg. She likes being in a like-minded group
to help motivate her and help her focus on her art with more discipline,
a feeling echoed by others in the Open Art Studio class.
Curtis Park seniors are all welcome to join in the ongoing Open Art Studio
class. Bring your art supplies, get input when needed by artist and facilitator,
Janice Horne, and enjoy the camaraderie of the group experience.
