First Friday Neighborhood Fling needs your help
By Rosanna Herber
Special to the Viewpoint
On the first Friday of each month, SCNA hosts an evening of fun where
Curtis Park neighbors meet, mingle and enjoy conversation together. It's
called First Friday and for the price, the socializing and food can't
be beat. A hot dinner is available for $5 a plate, wine and beer are $4
a glass and soda or water is $1.
Live entertainment plays in the background on most First Fridays and
recently an outside fire pit has been added for making s'mores. This event
has become a human hub of information for word-of-mouth communication
among neighbors who want to be in the know. Simply put, it's a low cost,
entertaining evening for neighbors and their families.
The First Friday Neighborhood Fling was the brainchild of Bruce Gerth,
former SCNA Board member and neighborhood volunteer extraordinaire. His
idea has become so popular that the event now fills Curtis Hall.
And that's where your help is needed. Up to this point, the organizing
committee and board members have been staffing the event, but new volunteers
are needed. The First Friday committee has developed a detailed list of
the tasks associated with hosting the event. These tasks include set up,
selling tickets, serving drinks and food, washing glasses, and cleaning
up after the event. Set up for the event begins at 5 p.m., neighbors arrive
at 6 p.m. and the evening ends at 9 p.m.
The committee is hoping various groups or streets in the neighborhood
will come forward to provide the volunteers to host a First Friday. Food,
music and s'mores will already be arranged. You need only provide the
volunteers to run the event during the evening.
To date, the Dogzilliary (January hosts), Figure 8 (February hosts)
and a group of Third Avenue neighbors who will be hosting in March, deserve
special thanks.
Join the effort to develop a deeper sense of community in Curtis Park
and bring neighbors closer together. If you, your street, or a special
group of neighbors are interested in hosting a First Friday, or are willing
to volunteer with others, please contact SCNA at Julie@sierra2.org
or call the office at 452-3005.
A big thank you goes to the original First Friday organizing committee
who took an idea and made it a success. They are Bruce Gerth, Natalie
Thiele, Mindy Giles, Katie Spaulding, Christine Somach. Susan Wall and
Rosanna Herber.
