Houses with vintage tiles sought for photo collection at California Heritage Museum

The houses of Curtis Park contain an exceptional collection of beautifully crafted, historically important, and irreplaceable tiles from the 1920s and 1930s. SCNA's Heritage Committee wants to photograph and identify as many vintage tiles as possible whether it be in an entry, bathroom, kitchen or decorating a fireplace.

The awareness of, and appreciation for, colorful vintage California tile has increased dramatically. Magazines, including Architectural Digest, have featured articles on California tiles and numerous books have been published on the subject.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum recently mounted exhibits on California tile and pottery. The California Heritage Museum is interested in documenting our neighborhood tile.

Several examples of vintage tiles found in Curtis Park can be found at "Historic and Preservation Information" page. The Web site also contains an expanded version of the recent article on Curtis Park tile.

More photos and information will be added to the Web site as they become available; so please share your tile with us. You can schedule an appointment for a "tile portrait session" by contacting Erik Fay at curtisparktile@sierra2.org.
