Summer's here and it's time for-well, how about frozen yogurt? If you're
looking for a less fattening alternative to the beloved neighborhood ice
cream, walk over to 2992 Freeport Boulevard and check out the new Yogurtopia.
Co-owners Kevin Standfield and David Ferris have opened a first of its
kind self-serve frozen yogurt bar stocked with Euro-style icy cold yogurt
and all the trimmings, including a fruit bar and assortment of nuts, chocolate
chips and sprinkles for toppings.
"We wanted to go healthy," said Standfield, who touts Yogurtopia's
secret recipe designed to be fresh and low-fat. There's just four grams
of fat in at 6-ounce serving of their regular frozen yogurt and no fat
in the non-fat version. All their frozen yogurt is made from live cultures
(that's what makes it Euro-style), imparting a naturally tangy and icy
taste.
Customers dispense their frozen yogurt directly from wall-mounted canisters
and then help themselves to the various toppings. When finished, it's
weighed at the counter at 39 cents per ounce.
"Our customers come in and select exactly what they want, without
waiting for other customers in front of them," said Standfield.
After a long vacancy at this location, it's a pleasure to see a colorful
interior of bright orange and turquoise with young and old delighting
in the tasty options. In the near future, Yogurtopia will add a party
room in the rear for birthday parties, sports team gatherings and any
other occasion.
Standfield and Ferris both grew up in Sacramento and have ties to the
local neighborhoods. Soon they will be opening a second location at 20th
and J Streets in the new Mars Building.
Yogurtopia is
open every day during the summer from noon to 10 p.m. If you walk there
and back you'll burn off an extra few calories to double the benefit of
this healthy treat.
