Tricks and treats in Curtis Park

Looking at my calendar, I can hardly believe fall is upon us and I am
writing a column for October. As far as months of the year go though,
October is a great one. Traditionally full of tricks and treats here are
some of my favorites
Gunther's licorice ice cream
This delightful treat becomes available in mid October. Not for the faint
of heart, our family favorite has the ability to dye your lips a ghoulish
black. You might not want to indulge prior to a first date, speaking engagement,
or any other social activity.
SCNA's Wine Tasting & Silent Auction o Oct. 13 at 4-7 p.m.
This community favorite offers the opportunity to sample terrific wines
and food from some of the most popular restaurants in Sacramento while
supporting SCNA and area schools.
Fall color
Admittedly we are not the midwest or the east coast, but Curtis Park has
a few beauties when the weather starts to turn. Cursed for those darned
prickly balls during the year, the liquid ambers on the front lawn of
Sierra 2 have been know to turn lovely shades of yellow and orange in
fall.
Pumpkin sculptures
This is truly a must see. A day or so before Halloween some our more talented
neighbors get out their carving tools and produce the most spectacular
carved pumpkins, I think, in all of Sacramento. At 26th Street and 3rd
Avenue, the lawn is covered with these scary, whimsical or just plain
beautiful veggies. It is especially fun to roam through the lit pumpkins
under the cloak of night, bumping into strangers that end up being your
next door neighbors. Trick or Treat-Is the pumpkin a fruit or vegetable?
Haunted places in Curtis Park
Our eclectic mix of renters at the Sierra 2 Center has brought the treat
of a somewhat unusual group. The Haunted and Paranormal Investigations
meets monthly at Sierra 2 to go over case studies in the area. Being the
month of Halloween, it is the perfect opportunity to have HPI investigate
your own paranormal tenants. HPI can come to your home and investigate
your haunting with their really neat, high-tech equipment. You can call
1-888-709-4HPI or www.HPIparanormal.net
for more information.
As you can see from this article, I'm more about the treats. So I'll leave
you with one trick that you may already know, but is always worth repeating.
When daylight savings begins in October, it is the perfect reminder to
change the batteries in your smoke detector. Our resident Energy Star,
Kathy Les, would also point out that with the time change, more lighting
is needed so make sure to stock up with CFL's!
