John Peters: 1942-2007Former SCNA board member, John Peters, passed away on Sept. 6 in his 7th Avenue home. John was diagnosed with kidney cancer shortly after turning 65. He put up a 1-1/2 year fight before ultimately losing the battle. John spent most of his professional life in the newspaper business as a reporter and editor. He started his career in 1960 as a photographer doing freelance work in Southern California, and eventually landed a job with the Modesto Bee in 1966. After 30 years as farm editor, feature writer, and editor, John retired from that paper to start a family with his wife, Lauren, and enjoy life as a stay-at-home dad. Here in Curtis Park, many will remember John as Camille and Olivia's dad. Being semi-retired, John found part-time work at Stockton Record, the Tracy Press, the Calaveras Enterprise and the Land Park News. Throughout his life, John also volunteered with community organizations such as the Humane Society and groups focusing on child abuse prevention and care of AIDS patients. Many SCNA board members will remember John for his candor and wry sense of humor. Curtis Park seniors have John to thank for obtaining the grant that started the Caring Neighbors program. Those close to John will remember him as a caring, giving man who cherished his family and friends.
