Special to the Viewpoint
Pack your blanket, chairs and picnic basket for a day in the park at
the first annual Curtis Fest. An extension of the popular Music in the
Park series, the event will be held from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on Saturday,
Sept. 29 in Curtis Park. The festival will feature music, dance, art and
family activities throughout the day and evening, concluding with an outdoor
movie in the park under the stars.
Over 50 artists, a least half of whom are from Curtis Park, are scheduled
to display and sell their creative expressions through watercolors, oils,
ceramics, jewelry, fused glass, sculptures, mixed medium, photography,
drawings and wearable art.
There will be plenty of live performances as well with dancers from Ciao
Italia-the Bambini Dancers, Sacramento Youth Ballet, Bali Grill Dancers
and the Ka Waikahe Lani Malie Dancers performing throughout the afternoon.
Runaway Stage Productions will also perform some of their Broadway musical
hits.
The Luster Brothers and Soul Twister will fill the day with soul, blues
and swing-billy folk music.
In addition to plenty of art to peruse, there will be numerous other activities
including children's face painting, roving entertainment, and other fun
and interesting goings-on to enjoy. Mike's Smokin' BBQ will also be on
hand with some great food to complement to your own picnic fare.
As the sun sets, the Obsidian Butterfly Fire Dancers will welcome in
the night. The event will conclude with an outdoor showing (onto a large
inflatable screen ) of the recent hit, "Night at the Museum"
starring Ben Stiller.
As an encore to the popular Music in the Park series, Curtis Fest was
established as a chance to celebrate the unique creativity, artistic talents
and sense of community that is present within our neighborhood and the
Sierra 2 Center for Arts & Community.
Music in the Park/Curtis Fest is a free music series presented by the
Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association and sponsored by ReMax realtors
Melissa, Michael and Meg Heede with additional funding from Target and
Council Member Lauren Hammond, sponsor of the evening's movie.
